Neck Liposuction for a Slimmer Face
Something our patients often ask us is: how can I remove excess fat from my neck?
Despite being of a healthy weight, some people are plagued by a pocket of fat around their upper neck that gives them the illusion of a double chin or no chin at all. Those who are suffering from this issue often choose to undergo facial cosmetic surgery to fix it, as diet and exercise are often futile against this kind of fat.
Getting rid of a double chin consists of using liposuction methods to suction out the fat, and the best cosmetic surgeon will strategically remove and keep the fat in certain areas to contour your face.
The neck contouring procedure gives the neck, chin, and face a firmer and more refined look, as a careless surgeon who leaves a sagging, crepey neck then forces the neck lipo patient into getting a necklift later in life. Neck contouring will ensure that the patient emerges from the procedure with a more youthful and well-balanced face and jawline.
The Liposuction Procedure
For most patients, neck liposuction is a quick procedure that takes around 30 minutes, and most of the time, our plastic surgery office likes to use only local anesthetic to give the patient a shorter recovery time.
Minimal incisions are made for neck lipo, usually in the form of just one or two small cuts behind the ears or under the chin. The surgeon will then insert a small tube called a cannula to remove excess fat. While many doctors simply remove the excess fat and call it a day, our plastic surgery specialists like to strategically contour the jawline with the cannula to give the best possible results.
Once fat is removed from the neck and chin areas, the doctor will lift and tighten the fascia at the outer edges of the platysma muscles on either side of the neck using sutures. This “hammock” effect supports the platysma muscles to create a long-lasting and natural shape in the neck. This way, the results of the procedure last longer.
In some cases, the inner portions of the platysma muscles have to be tightened through platysmaplasty.
To wrap up the neck and chin liposuction procedure, the doctor will then settle all muscles and skin, possibly cutting away excess skin around these same incisions. Then, the incisions are closed with stitches or sutures so that any scarring is minimal.
Liposuction Results
Due to the small size of the incisions and the minimally invasive techniques of Dr. Aynehchi, our neck lipo patients only have to take a few days away from their regular life.
Swelling and bruising are to be expected after neck liposuction, but this should go away within the first 10 to 14 days after surgery.
Due to the healing incision sites, we fit patients with a special supportive chin strap that should be worn for around 4 days.
It should be noted that patients cannot always get the results they want from just liposuction; in some cases, our doctors will recommend additional procedures that can be done at the same time as the liposuction procedure.
For those wanting additional contouring, a chin implant may be necessary. A chin implant is a piece of silicone that can be adhered to the jawbone to more drastically shape the face.
Additionally, patients may experience sagging skin in the months or years following their procedure due to the skin’s natural loss of elasticity. In these cases, non-invasive, non-surgical methods can be used to tighten the skin. These can range from dermal fillers to microdermabrasion.
